About Amsterdam, NY

Amsterdam, located in Montgomery County, NY, was named after the city in Netherlands.

The area was originally inhabited by the Mohawk tribe of the Iriquois. Dutch settlers arrived in the area in the early 18th century and called the area Veeders Mills and Veedersburgh after Albert Veeder, a mill owner. The name was changed to Amsterdam in 1803. Later, the Mohawk turnpike, the Erie Canal, and the area’s creeks enabled for the development of many mills. Though the area produced many goods, it became especially known for its rugs and carpet production.

In 1830 the area was incorporated as a village. Later, 1885, Amsterdam was incorporated as a city. The City of Amsterdam, NY is located within the Town of Amsterdam.
